The winner of the 2006 “Sir Martin Wood Prize” is Dr. Kazutomo Suenaga from the Research Centre for Advanced Carbon Materials at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). Dr Suenaga received his Ph.D in Materials Science at the University of Tokyo in 1994. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris (1994-1997) and at the Solid State Physics Laboratory in the University Paris-Sud (1997-1998). Then he joined the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) as a researcher (1998-2001) and now is a team leader at National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). He has published over 80 scientific papers and delivered more than 40 invited lectures over the past ten years. A recipient of the Honda Memorial Promotional prize (1997) and the Seto prize (Japanese society of Microscopy 2005). Grantee par Sumitomo Foundation (1997) and CREST-JST (2006).
Dr Kazutomo Suenaga is recognized for his significant achievements in his major research interest involving the atomic level characterization of individual molecules by means of electron microscopy and spectroscopy.
Dr Suenaga was awarded the prize by Sir Martin Wood and presented a lecture on “Electron microscopy and spectroscopy on single molecules” at the 2006 Millennium Science Forum organized by Oxford Instruments and held at International House in Tokyo on Tuesday 14th November 2006. Keynote speakers at the event included Professor Maki Kawai from The University of Tokyo and Professor Martyn Chamberlain from Durham University in the UK.
