NbTi/Fine Filament OST has a long history of fine filament NbTi production, including the SSC and RHIC projects. OST provided essentially all of the conductor for the RHIC project at Brookhaven National laboratory, about 20 thousand kilometers or 60 tonnes of strand, completing the job on schedule in 1994.
Great emphasis was placed on achieving uniformity in the final product by closely controlling the uniformity of the materials and processes used. The success of this approach is documented by the publication of Garber, et, al, "Superconducting Wire and Cable for RHIC", IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, July 1991, volume 30, number 4, pp. 1722-1725.
OST received the number one ranking of the seven companies participating in SSC conductor development, and has continued to manufacture SSC-type strand for high current dipole and quadrupole magnets.
