Superconducting Wire

For many years OST has been a leading supplier of a wide range of low temperature superconducting wire and cable.  Products available include NbTi in a copper matrix, both as single core and multifilamentary wires; CuNi and mixed matrix versions of our NbTi wires; wire-in-channel NbTi which provides additional copper for the highest stability magnets;  and multifilamentary Nb3Sn wires in a variety of configurations to meet the exacting demands of very high field superconducting magnets.

We maintain continuous production of high quality wire suitable for magnets operating in a persistent mode.  The requirements in such cases call for long piece-lengths that hold to strict end-to-end diameter uniformity.  Our precision manufacturing techniques enable us to meet these prerequisites.  To assure our performance standards, we continuously perform non-destructive quality assurance testing on every length of wire.

We also offer a full range of insulation material for our conductors which are compatible with various potting media.  These range from braided insulation using synthetic or glass fibers to film insulation produced to IEC specifications.

The bronze route is a robust, well established manufacturing process for Nb3Sn wire.  OST has been producing bronze Nb3Sn for high field magnets since the late 1970s.  Thousands of high field, persistent current magnets have used this wire over the last twenty years, including NMR magnets up to 900 MHz.   Bronze provides a reliable, cost effective conductor for magnet field strengths up to the 20 tesla range.

OST provides a range of standard bronze Nb3Sn wires with internal Cu stabilizer.  A sampling of these is shown in the data table.  Please inquire regarding additional sizes or configurations available.
