Cryojet® nitrogen jet for X-ray crystallography

Cryojet nitrogen jet for X-ray crystallography

Cryojet® nitrogen jet for X-ray crystallography

Cryojet is a cold nitrogen gas flow system that enables X-ray crystallography to be performed at temperatures down to 90 K. Once cold, samples are held at a stable, controlled temperature for the duration of the measurement.

Features and benefits

  • Wide temperature range 90-300 K (CryojetXL) or 90-490 K (CryojetHT)
  • No nozzle icing or blocking - dual nitrogen flow technology provides shielding of the cold jet
  • Compact design and quiet operation no pumps or compressors required, saving space and avoiding mechanical noise
  • No moving parts mean minimal maintenance

Operation

  • The leg of the Cryojet is inserted into liquid nitrogen in a storage dewar
  • Liquid nitrogen is evaporated using a simple heating element at the tip of the leg; this generates a flow of nitrogen gas
  • The gas passes along two flow paths (flexible lines) to the Cryojet head; one of these is for the sample (cold gas) and one for the annular shield (warm gas)
  • A heat exchanger in the Cryojet head delivers cold nitrogen gas at constant temperature to the sample
  • The second flow of dry nitrogen gas is generated in the same way but is heated to room temperature in the Cryojet head. This is directed to the nozzle where it forms an annular gas jet around the cold flow. This shields both nozzle and sample to prevent ice accumulation
  • The Cryojet Controller powers the heaters in the dewar and Cryojet head.  The sample temperature and gas flows are controlled from the front panel or via a standard RS232 interface
  • The Cryojet head is supported by a fully flexible translation stand to ensure that the nitrogen gas jet is positioned accurately with respect to the sample
  • The storage dewar is held at atmospheric pressure to permit liquid nitrogen refills with minimal disruption to the jet temperature.

Options

  • Autofill for liquid nitrogen dewar to provide automatic nitrogen dewar replenishment during long-term use
  • Larger (160 litre) nitrogen dewar
  • Electronic liquid nitrogen level meter and probe
  • Wheeled base-for ease of movement around the laboratory.
  • Longer transfer line.
  • RS232 or GPIB cables for remote operation of Cryojet Controller
