Kelvinox®VT, Dilution refrigerator with sample in vacuum.
A sample-in-vacuum dilution refrigerator that provides a simple means of cooling samples below 25mK.
It is designed to fit into any Oxford Instruments variable temperature inserts (VTI) with 50mm access. As it uses the cold gas environment of the VTI, there is no need for a 1K pot on the insert. This provides two key benefits:
- The temperature range of a new or existing VTI can be extended to 25mK or less
- Appropriate use of exchange gas allows measurements up to 300K
- There is no liquid helium in the sample horizontal plane making the Kelvinox®VT ideal for neutron or X-ray scattering experiments
Operating principles
The dilution refrigerator is cooled to below 2K using exchange gas and a continuous flow of liquid 4He pumped from the helium bath.
The 3He/4He mixture is then circulated as in a conventional dilution refrigerator. The returning 3He in the mixture is re-condensed by heat exchange with the VTI itself at about 1.5K.
- This compact system can be cooled from room to base temperature in about 6 hours
