Microstat®BT, System for high resolution magneto-optical measurements

MicrostatBT

This cryostat has been designed for magneto-optical imaging and high-resolution micro-spectroscopy in the presence of magnetic fields(up to 5T) and low temperatures( as low as 3K).

The cryostat is made up of two components:

  • A compact 5 tesla vertical solenoid with 40 or 70mm room temperature bore
  • A MicrostatHiResII continuous flow cryostat with a pillar that extends into the room temperature bore of the magnet. A mechanical XYZ translation stage is available to position a sample at the focal point of a microscope or at the field centre, as desired

Key features and benefits

  • Sub-micron spatial resolution measurements possible at 4.2K
  • Low sample drift at changing temperature enabling long experiments without having to readjust the optics
  • Combined low temperature and magnetic field environments.
  • Adjustable window position, enabling the minimum working distance for sample thicknesses of up to 6mm.
  • Easy sample change involving unscrewing the top of the pillar
  • Although the pillared MicrostatHiResII and magnet cryostat are supplied as an integrated system, they are perfectly able to operate independently:
-The pillared MicrostatHiResII can be used outside the magnet in its normal way.  The pillar may even be removed and replaced by a standard cap for an easier interface with some microscopes or spectrometers
-Likewise the magnet provides a flexible ultra-compact 5 tesla magnet with 40mm RT bore access.  Persistent operation gives hold times greater than 12 hours

Automation
LabVIEWTM virtual instruments are available for the ITC503 and IPS120 to allow automation of temperature and field. These can be integrated into a complete data acquisition system.

Applications:

  • Flux visualisation of superconducting materials
  • Micro-Raman or micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy for studying spatial variation in electronic states and the chemical composition of materials under applied field
  • The measurement of dimensional changes of magneto-strictive materials

Options

  • The magnet is supplied as standard with a 40mm bore, a 70mm bore option is available on request.
  • Wired cernox thermometer at sample position
  • A wide range of window materials can be fitted to the MicrostatBT. Special windows with non-parallel faces and anti-reflection coatings are available
  • Pump options. A simple oil-free vane pump GF4 is supplied for operation to 3.2K. Lower temperatures (to 2.7K) require a single stage rotary pump (EPS40)
  • Automated  needle valve:  can be fitted to the LLT to allow automation of the helium flow regulation and optimisation of the  helium consumption
