Measuring Oil and Water in Seeds using the MQC Benchtop NMR AnalyserOil and water in seeds are critical parameters Accurate and fast measurement of oil and water content is important to breeders, growers and buyers for determining the commercial value of oil-bearing crops such as rape (canola), sunflower, linseed, soya bean and groundnut.

Similar requirements lie in measurements of the oil yields in the development of improved crop varieties and by seed crushers to measure oil content of the press cake and residues to determine extraction efficiency. Seed oils derived throughout this important global vegetable oil industry are used in foodstuffs, the manufacture of biofuels and as a chemical feedstock for many products.

Why choose NMR?

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) offers a clean, rapid and accurate alternative to traditional wet chemical techniques and calibrations are much easier to maintain than for Near Infra-Red (NIR). No hazardous solvents to use or dispose of NMR is a bulk technique measuring all the oil in the sample, not just on the surface NMR calibration is simple requiring just three samples with oil and water content that span the ranges of interest NMR is a very stable technique, requiring little re-calibration, ensuring reproducible results

The NMR technique is non-destructive so samples may be analysed repeatedly before being analysed by other techniques NMR is used in the ISO 10565 method, adopted by organisations such as FOSFA (Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fats Associations) NMR is the method of choice for sunflower seeds, and is the only GIPSA approved technique for sunflower seed oil determination NMR measurements may be applied to any other oil bearing seed, including corn, castor, jatropha, mustard & arabidopsis MQC offers multiple advantages:

There are two versions of the MQC which accommodate a range of sample sizes for this application: MQC5 is for large sample/seed analysis up to a volume of 80 ml - using 40 mm (40 ml) or 51 mm (80 ml) diameter probes MQC23 is for single seeds, small seed & low volumes up to 14 ml - using 10 mm (1 ml), 18 mm (7 ml) or 26 mm (14 ml) diameter probes.
