Catalytic converter recycling

Ceramic based automotive catalytic converters contain the precious metals Platinum (Pt), Palladium (Pd) and Rhodium (Rh). Because of the high value of precious metals, catalytic converter scrap value is high. Used converters are recycled – the honeycomb core is removed and ground to a fine powder which can then be smelted to extract the pure precious metals or sold directly to a refiner.

Either of these processes requires accurate analysis of the Pt, Pd and Rh content for accurate pricing. The X-MET8000 series of hand-held XRF analysers provide fast and accurate determination of Pt, Pd and Rh in the catalyst powder – maximizing productivity and profits with little sample preparation, at various stages in the recycling and refining process of automotive catalytic converters.

The empty exhaust converter cans, manifolds and pipes can also be tested and sorted on site at the scrap yard using the X-MET’s alloy calibration (included as standard), adding further value to the recycling process.
