Optical Cryostats for Spectroscopy applications
Our range of optical cryostats can be used for spectroscopy applications such as UV/Visible relectivity and absorption, FTIR, Terahertz, Photoluminescence, Electroluminescence, Raman scattering, elctrical transport measurements, ultrafast spectroscopy, SPM, STM, AFM and magneto-optics.
There are many reasons for wanting to carry out optical spectroscopy measurements on samples at low temperatures, including:
Some phenomena, e.g. superconductivity, formation of Wannier-Mott excitons and the quantum Hall effects occur only at low temperatures
Spectral lines become sharper and stronger, allowing more structure to be revealed
Excitations normally masked by the high thermal phonon background at room temperature become observable at low temperatures
Our cryostats can be fitted with up to 4 optical windows (depending on model) and we offer a wide range of materials to cover the regions of the optical spectrum you are interested in including Ultra-Violet (UV), Visible, Near-Mid, Far and Extreme Infra-red. Windows are demountable and you can change windows at a later date to extend your experiments. We can also provide wedge windows and anti-reflection coatings, if you are concerned about reflection within the windows.For more details, visit the page on optical windows.
Choosing the right cryostat
To choose the right cryostat you need to decide on the following parameters:
Cooling technology: nitrogen (77 K), helium (4K and 1.5 K) or Cryogen-free (1.5 K or 4K)
Sample environment: vaccuum or exchange gas
Working distance requirements: few mn for microscopy (Microstat range) or few cm for macroscopy (Optistat range)
Magnet required or not

Spectromag and SpectromagPT(cryogen-free version) for magnetic field up to 10 T
