Vector magnets or vector rotation magnets

Vector magnets or vector rotate superconducting magnets offer a range of experimental opportunities through the ability to tilt and rotate the magnetic field vector electrically, rather than mechanically. In our Magnet Systems Group we have the design and manufacturing expertise to offer you:

  • The ability to tilt and rotate the magnetic field vector in two or three axes
  • Optical access to your sample by using a complete set of split pair coils, typically with sample access (for example, VTI) in the vertical z-axis and optical access in the horizontal x- and y-axes
  • Cryogen free (Cryofree®) vector magnets integrated in our TritonTM cryogen free dilution refrigerators or our Teslatron®PT cryogen free integrated magnet/VTI systems
  • Compatibility with all Oxford Instruments experimental inserts
  • Easy to use magnetic field vector control with dedicated vector rotate software
  • Flexibility of magnet operation in swept field or persistent modes

Mode of operation

A vector rotate magnet operates in a number of modes:
 

  • Single-axis mode provides the full field in the vertical or horizontal direction.

For example, a 9/1/1 3-dimensional vector rotate magnet (9 Tesla vertical solenoid in z-axis, 1 T horizontal split pair in each of the x- and y-axes) gives a full 9 T vertical field, or 1 T in either of the horizontal axes.
 
In combined mode the magnetic field vector can be adjusted by small angular variation from a principal axis:

  • For example, a 9/1/1 magnet typically gives a tilting angle of ±2.5° with a vector magnitude of 7 T; with a 2-dimensional magnet as shown above, the tilt is restricted to the z-x plane

 

 

 

 

 

 

Alternatively full rotation of the field vector in a sphere or plane is possible.



  • For example, a 9/1/1 magnet allows full 360° spherical rotation of a 1 T field; with a 2-dimensional magnet as shown above, the tilt is restricted to the z-x plane
